Battle Royale

Knowing that America are going to remake this, it is my sworn duty to get everyone interested in the original before they RUIN it. It is a foregone conclusion that they will. They really suck at anything violent and pscycological when it comes to film making

Be converted!

This movie does look good, and I'll look into renting it. Buuuuuuuuuuut.....as someone from the United States (Not Canada or Mexico that are also in North America, or from any of the countries in South America) I have to say we do okay with the violent, psychological films sometimes....Silence of the Lambs, Seven, Blue Velvet, Dressed to Kill....that's off the top of my head. I'm not arguing with you, PK- just tossing out some HEY! ALL INCLUSIVE "AMERICANS"-ARE-FULL-OF-SUCK TALK ISN'T FUN conversation. Softening with a smiley------> =D because I swear I'm not the PC police. No, really. ♥ Don't fear me. If you ever have a specific ~It sucked when Hollywood ruined THESE movies~ or ~the US really fucked up the world then they made THIS series of decisions~ sort of post you'd like to make, it's highly likely we'll be in agreement.

Aha! Now we're getting somewhere! You don't like Hollywood remakes of Japanese thrillers. Hmmm....I can't have an informed discussion on this topic with you because I've never seen the originals, but I did enjoy the Ring and I adore the movie Dark Water (partially because of my deep and carnal love of Jennifer Connelly ♥)

Subtitled movies can be a hard sell here, so I'm not sure if the thought is so much, "Hey! Let's try to do this BETTER!" as "This is such an excellent story, and hardly anyone in the US has seen it...let's make it accessible in a way that US viewers can immerse themselves in the experience."

Again, I won't argue with you regarding the Japanese originals being much, much better. I'd assume that they are, even though I've never seen them. I can't agree that The Ring and Dark Water sucked, though. I'll agree to disagree! =D Insult Jennifer Connelly to me and we might have to meet in New Zealand for fistacuffs....

Wait, what? We're doing a remake of Battle Royale? *shakeshead* That is not going to go well at all.

I love BR in most of its iterations. I've seen the movie several times, seen the sequel once (nowhere near as good as the first), and read the book several times. The book is amazing, and I recommend you read it if you haven't yet. As fun and amazing as the film is, the book is soooooooooooo much better - there's so much more detail, and you get to know nearly all of the students pretty well during the course of their game.

The only thing BR that I haven't read is the English adaptation of the manga, because the translator/editor changes a very important part of the premise, and takes liberties with the dialogue. Sorry, TokyoPop, they can't be on a "reality TV show". It doesn't work like that.

One of my students was reading it in class about 5 years ago (scary the similarity in time!), and he recommended it. The book actually made the rounds of the classroom over the course of the school year, with all of the boys and about half the girls reading it. Of course, I made the mistake of reading it right before a field trip, and was paranoid on the entire bus ride out and back.^^

I've read bits of the manga in the bookstore, just because I like the art. But every time I do, I'm reminded why I don't like the adaptation. I agree: it doesn't really work. Maybe that's why Takami stopped work on the manga sequel.
